Universiti Utara Malaysia

Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) is the sixth university established in Malaysia. It was officially established on 16 February 1984 under the Universiti Utara Malaysia Corporation and uses the motto “Ilmu, Budi, Bakti” (Knowledge, Virtue, Service). Its vision is to become a prominent Management University, while its mission is to be an established academic centre of excellence in teaching and learning, research, consultancy and publication continuously in the field of management in order to produce human capital capable of and committed to developing the country and humanity.

The establishment of UUM was due to the increasing demand for higher education and at the same time lack of space in the five existing universities. Thus, in August 1983, the government instructed the Ministry of Education to conduct a feasibility study and prepare a working paper for the sixth university project. This sixth university project was approved by the Cabinet on 19 October 1983. The Sultan of Kedah, Tuanku Alhaj Abdul Halim Mu'adzam Shah Ibni Almarhum Sultan Badlishah was appointed as the UUM Chancellor. The first UUM Vice Chancellor was Professor Tan Sri Dato' Awang Had Salleh.

There are two branches of UUM, the first in Sintok, Kedah, which is also the UUM main campus while the second campus is located in Kuala Lumpur. In 2008, UUM had successfully created history by making massive changes; A total of 13 faculties were merged into three academic colleges, comprising the College of Business (COB), College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) and College of Law, Government and International Studies (COLGIS).

Apart from being a leading university, UUM also possesses many of its own uniqueness in terms of facilities such as the University Inn and EDC Hotel for tourists. In addition, UUM has provided a total of 600 units of houses for the welfare of its staff serving the university. UUM has utilised some of its forest reserve area of 107 hectares to be developed as one of the tourist attractions by setting-up several facilities such as a 9-hole golf course, an international go-kart circuit, camping area, shooting and archery range, deer park, equestrian centre and others.
